Effective Strategies to Diversify Academic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Faculty
What role do department chairs and deans play in ensuring diversity within academe?
This presentation is the result of a year of work by a diverse group of 40 deans, department chairs/heads, and senior faculty. After attending conferences with programming about diversity in the professoriate, participants attended a three-day writing retreat. The culmination of this effort are several products on one CD: the Dean's Guide to Diversity, the Department Chair's/Head's Guide to Diversity, and a set of powerpoint presentation slides that could be used by faculty and academic administrators to convince their peers of the merits of engaging in various "best practices" to increase faculty diversity. While many other excellent guides to diversity have been published, these products feature the "voice" of faculty and academic administrators who have actually implemented and worked with the practices suggested by others.

This project is the result of a National Science Foundation (NSF) award to Lisa Frehill, Mary O'Connell and Elba Serrano, professors at New Mexico State University. CPST is now participating in dissemination efforts for the project.
On February 14th there was a workshop held in Boston which focused on Diversifying STEM. Click here to access the presentations and reports from that workshop.
